- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2011Intro
To start off, I have been enjoying the heck out of the multiplayer portion of this game. I am a veteran from BF2 and BC/BC2, so I expected nothing but top notch game play. BF3 MP has not only met my expectations, it has equipped an M203 grenade launcher and fired a round directly into my face (yes, I just said that!). The team-based mechanics are excellent, I love how the game rewards teamwork and completing team-based objectives. You can play as four roles: Assault (combat medic), Engineer (anti vehicle/aircraft), and Support (heavy machine guns, demolitions, replenishes ammo). The roles have been slightly tweaked since BC2. but they all feel very tight and balanced overall. I myself have been messing around with each one, and my current favorites are Engineer and Support.
For this review, I am going to review each are separately. Im not a fan of "numbered" reviews, since games appeal to different people. Some (most, actually ;) people will absolutely adore this game, but there are always those that will not like this game. You will have to just read through my review to see if this game will appeal to you.
Single Player
I will start off by reviewing the (in my opinion) weakest part of this otherwise excellent package, the single-player campaign. I know that the focus of the core Battlefield series has always been the multiplayer, so I did not factor the single-player campaign into the overall score. If this game were released a few years back (before COD 4), it probably would have been heralded as a great game. Unfortunately, after the over-abundance of military shooters released in the past few years, the campaign just feels unoriginal, besides a few really cool missions. The story is cliche', involving terrorists getting their hands on a WMD after an earthquake strikes Iran and Iraq. You play as a Marine recon soldier, a navy F-18 pilot, and an Army tank driver. Overall, i feel that the campaign is varied and the pacing is great. The F-18 mission is especially cool, and it makes you feel like you are actually IN THE COCKPIT. You must experience it for yourself to truly appreciate it. I expect that most people will get halfway through the campaign and then abandon it for multiplayer.
Graphics
If you have been following this game at all, you probably already know that this game has some great graphics. I have a Phenom II X6 1090t and an Nvidia GTX 570, and on max settings (Ultra, 16xAF,4xAA) I average about 50-60 FPS in indoor areas and about 35-50 outdoors (35 FPS being a worst case scenario). I have recently been playing on high, though, without AA enabled, and my FPS are much higher. The lighting affects are to die for, the detail found in trees and vegetation are awesome, and the water affects are excellent (the Caspian Border map is a perfect example). My only complaint is that the facial animations are not all that great, but that is just a minor quibble.
Gameplay
The controls are very tight (as expected for a PC FPS) and responsive. Vehicles seem easier to control than in previous titles, although flying jets will take some getting used to. All of the MP maps are well thought out, and there is a good balance between open areas and choke points. As I stated before, there (as usual w/ BF titles) is a large focus on teamplay, and you WILL NOT get very far by trying to play this like COD. The game REWARDS you for staying with and supporting your team. As the assault role, you will be pumping out medpacs to heal teammates, and once you unlock the resuscitator, you will also be able to revive fallen teammates. As an engineer, your main focus is taking out enemy vehicles (land, air and sea-borne) and repairing friendly vehicles. You start off with a standard RPG, but you will soon unlock cool gadgets like mobile SAM's to take out helicopters and fighter jets. As the support role, you will replenish your teammates' ammo, and you later unlock C4 explosives and a cool EOD robot. As recon, you will obviously be sniping like a mofo, but you get some pretty cool gadgets to mess around with as well (I have not spend much time in this role). All of the familiar game modes return (Conquest,Rush, team rush) along with a Co-op campaign.
Sound
The Battlefield series has always focused on creating a realistic setting, to include the sounds that weapons make. This series, by far, has the best-sounding weapons in the industry. The sound of you taking out a nearby enemy helicopter, to have it crash and explode a few meters from you, well.....you'll have to hear it for yourself.
Lasting appeal
I am positive that this game will have a large audience in the months (and probably years) to come. I have had no problem finding a populated match, and the inclusion of dedicated servers will in no doubt extend its longevity. Heck, the servers for BF2 and BC2 are still heavily populated!! i obviously cannot say the same for the single player. Even if you do finih it, there is really no incentive for multiple playthroughs.
Conclusion
BF3 has the best multiplayer out of any shooter that I have ever played. There. It. I didn't expect any less, bit as i said before, this game really blew me away. The single player is definitely the weak link of the package, but it is by no means terrible. I'm sure many people will like it. I gave this game 5 stars because the multiplayer is top-notch, and has always been the main draw of the Battlefield series.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2011This game introduced so much with the Frostbite 2 engine that added so much realism to the game. The graphics are insane and the game runs smooth a majority of the time. The bullets flying by distorts some of your vision which adds to the realism. The number of vehicles make strategy and tactics all that more important. With the Back to Karkand DLC now out, the amount of content to the game is immense. If you get a good squad together, this game is extremely fun to play.
I used to enjoy playing MW2 over BF:BC2 just because it was easy to join a game and start shooting right away. Now that both MW3 and BF3 are out, there is no comparison. MW3 is essentially a glorified map pack of MW2, which is great, but no where near the innovation as BF3 due to the improved graphics and content. I spend my time pretty much exclusively on BF3 over MW3.
As for Origin and Battlelog, my feelings are mixed. It is the Steam of EA, but for BF3 it really doesn't do anything for you besides booting up the game. For Battlelog, which is separate from Origin, and yes you do need both to play BF3, it is a pretty unique idea. Battlelog is essentially a browser based menu for BF3. I do like how it is innovative in the fact that I can check all of my stats, weapons, vehicles, etc. on it without having to boot up the game. I can pretty much access it on any computer, even my non-BF3 laptop. The server browser is done in Battlelog. We can start a party on Battlelog to assist in joining to the same server. On most occasions, the game attempts to put all of us on the same team and squad.
On a side note though, if you do get the digital download from Amazon, take that key and activate it on Origin rather than downloading the game from Amazon. Save yourself the hassle.
Overall, I quite enjoy this game. The game is awesome and Origin/Battlelog is ok.
Disclaimer: This game is not without bugs. My game crashes to desktop at times. My friends have a hard time connecting to the servers at times. This is why I dropped a star.
